In this introductory issue of our newsletter, we have decided to start things off with the topic of worship. It's something we all are called to do whether we are a leader or not in the church. One thing I've found out over the years of my being a worship leader is not everyone may be called to the worship ministry, but everyone has a comment or opinion about the subject. I have to laugh at myself for even mentioning that, but ask any pastor or worship leader and they will tell you numerous stories of people in the church who come up to them and tell them, "your music is too loud, why don't you sing more hymns, your songs all sound like love songs, why don't you do more fast songs, why don't you do more slow songs…" and the list just goes on and on. One of the things that I've tried to incorporate over the years is a balance and to know the pulse of the church. Having been raised in church around hymns, I've come to love and appreciate them and the heritage from which they have been birthed. Many in our churches today were not raised around hymns and; therefore, don't fully understand them. I feel an obligation to share that heritage with these folks, even if the hymns are done in a new and contemporary fashion. Likewise, for the "old-timers" it's important for us to realize that God did not go into retirement after we were saved. God is continually moving and society is continually changing and the musical styles will continue to change... but ultimately, we are all called to Worship Him...in what ever fashion you are comfortable with...and in Spirit and in Truth.
