The Role of the Church in Families and Relationships

Newsletter Article ~ 3rd Quarter ~ 2007

Highly effective churches do not take on the problems of families and couples and try to fix them, but rather provide the tools, skills and knowledge to them to figure out the problems and find the solutions.  How do they do that?

  • Teach people to identify their needs and how to meet them

  • Provide skill sets and knowledge about relationships that allow them to implement solutions with confidence

  • Provide clear and Biblical standards for what is expected in relationships

  • Motivate couples to develop goals and plans by providing

  • Information

  • Models

  • Encouragement

  • Procedural Assistance

  • Assessment Tools

  • Address couples or families as a unit and teach them tools they need to build a unified
    relationship

  • Communicate the same information in disparate ways – seek to achieve recall, comprehension
and application, i.e., application leads to transformation

  • Provide Mentors and Coaches

  • Seek God’s Blessing through Prayer both for and with couples and families

  • Institute Evaluation – regularly assess how well your church is providing support and education to couples and families to give them the needed tools.
