TEN 2007 - Year in Review

Dear Friends, President, Todd Ferrell

The holiday season has started and we are in the celebration mode of Thanksgiving.  As I take a moment to stop and reflect on all that God has done this year, I'm forever grateful to the Lord.

This year has been an opportunity for us to continue the growth and outreach of the ministry. We've met our goals by providing quarterly newsletters. First Quarter we dealt with Community Service and explored the importance of it and the difference between it and Outreach. In the second quarter we looked at Stewardship and gave new perspectives on what exactly stewardship might look like. We also explored the ideas behind why people give and that nasty four letter word "accountability".  In our Third Quarter newsletter we looked at the aspect of Supporting Families and Relationships. This topic brought about a great deal of discussion from folks. In here we explored who were the families in our churches, what do those families need from the church, what role the church should take in families and in relationships, and identified some of the key principles of family ministry.  All of these newsletters can be found online at Newsletters.

This past May we celebrated our 19th Anniversary with our Conference in Dallas Texas . The theme for the conference was Dynamic Transformation - Deliberate Growth.  The conference studied what are some of the key elements to be effective in ministry today. We as an organization as well as some of the churches that attended have been putting these principles into place and are seeing great changes, new vision, and new passion in our ministries and personal lives. I really encourage you to get to a conference and be part of what God is doing today!

At the conference we had the great honor of bringing in two new affiliate churches into membership with TEN - Sanctuary of Love in Dallas Texas and Abundant Grace Church in Hickory North Carolina . Visit their sites and the ministries of all our affiliates online and when you travel. Current Affiliates .

For a long time we've looked and are still looking for great, dynamic, passionate people who want to be part of the board of directors of TEN. We were fortunate to find two such people this year and added David Thomas, pastor of Abundant Grace Church ( Hickory NC ) and Janice Lacount (minister at Sanctuary of Love ( Dallas , TX ) to our board of directors. Each of them has brought a great deal of knowledge and desire to see the mission of TEN be advanced.

On a personal note, I had the great honor of being able to go and attend several other events around the country and partake in what else is going on. In June I attended the Survivor's of Ex-Gay conference in Los Angeles that was taking place at the same time as the Exodus International conference. This conference was very powerful to see so many people who had been affected either by ex-gay ministries or abusive churches and how after 5, 10, 15, 20+ years they had not ever reconciled all those hurt feelings. The conference was quite emotional and quite a breakthrough for many.

In July I was asked to lead worship for the Evangelicals Concerned conference in Los Angeles . Historically, I nor TEN has had much interaction with EC, which was not intentional, but just seemed to work out that way. I saw it as a great honor to be asked to lead worship, and found it to be a great blessing to me. The same people who fellowship at the EC Conferences often also come to TEN conferences. Likewise it was great to meet many new people for the first time.

In August, I had the privilege of leading worship and doing a couple of workshops at the Eagles Nest School of Worship and the Arts in Austin Texas. I've had the great honor of being asked to participate in this conference for the past 3 years and the each time I go it's like coming home each time. The friends that I've developed over the years at this conference are true family. The presence and move of the Holy Spirit is thick at these conferences.

In September I traveled the Bishops and Elders conference which was in  Sarasota Florida . This was the second year that we have held this conference and TEN is one of the many groups represented on the panel of organizations. This conference sends representatives from affirming organizations and denominations around the states with about 30 organizations being represented.  Their vision is much like that of TEN. TEN's mission and vision is to see the Evangelical Community come together knowing that we can do more together than we can separately. The Bishops and Elders Conference is bringing all the GLBT Christian Affirming faith communities together so that we can do more than we could separately.  Be looking for more news on this. Next year the plan is to meet in New Orleans .

One of the goals of the Board of Directors of TEN was to address the issue and need of new works/church planting. Obviously the laws of each state and local community are different, so keeping track of that would not be easy. What we've decided to do and have done is to create a resources section on our web site which will assist someone who is called to start a new church work. The resources on here will guide you through the processes of what needs to be completed in order to establish this new work. I encourage you to visit this page: Starting a New Church.  I'd like to thank Jack McConnell from St. Jude Community Church who helped us in the development of this new resource.

Several other goals have been met this year, in that we have developed or re-developed the TEN brochure and Scholarship brochure. I want to thank Carl Smith from San Francisco for his assistance in helping us achieve these goals.

We also changed our newsletter format this year, and have started using Constant Contact as a means of communicating with you all. This not only gives us a consistent look, but also, has helped us manage our database to where hopefully you aren't receiving 2 or 5 copies of the newsletter now. (grin).  You can safely now add or remove yourself from our database by going to the web site and looking at the bottom of most pages.

In closing I want to share with you some of the projects that we have on the plate that you will be hearing more about or that we are currently working on.  This year we've started monthly conference calls with the affiliates in order to be a continued resource of communication, fellowship and encouragement to one another. During these calls we catch up on news from the affiliates and discuss different ministerial topics that challenge us and get us to think.

We are currently working on redevelopment efforts of our web site of which you will be hearing more about in the coming newsletters.

We're launching a new conference web site this year which we believe will be a great resource for all those who are looking at coming to this dynamic 20th anniversary celebration. The launch of this should be taking place very soon! Plan now to attend TEN Conference 2008 - May 22-25, 2008 in Phoenix Arizona .

We are currently working on the development of our Public Relations/Marketing efforts and hope to have more of that ready to go by the conference next year.

Obviously, it takes many hands, hours and monies to do this work and for all those who support TEN we are truly grateful. If you are not a supporter of TEN, we encourage you to do so. Your gifts are tax deductible and go toward the work of this ministry.  Your financial support enables us to do more outreach, produce more materials, keep our conference costs down which enables more people to attend. Likewise, we consistently need people who are willing to give of their time, talents and gifts. TEN is completely run by volunteers.  There is no paid staff, so every dollar you give goes directly into ministry.  Please, would you consider donating to the ministry today? Donate

On behalf of the entire Board of Director's, we wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas and Happy Holiday Season, and we look forward to sharing many great things with you again in 08!

God Bless you,

Todd Ferrell, President

Schubert Shears Fund - Make a Difference in Someone Else's Life!

Churches across the World celebrate World AIDS Day on the first Sunday of December each year.

This year affiliate churches across America will be joining together on December 2, 2007 to remember those whose lives have been cut short by this horrible disease and yet at the same time celebrating those who are still with us and living with HIV/AIDS.

TEN and our affiliate churches have been greatly impacted over our 20 year history by HIV/AIDS. Many friends, pastors and loved ones have succumb to this disease. All have a special place in our hearts. Two in particular changed our lives forever; Frank Shears and Bill Schubert. Both of these guys, Christians living with HIV/AIDS literally lived each year in an effort to make it to one more TEN Conference and to be able to join with other Christians in worship.

For each of these men, attending the conference meant hope, meant life, and brought a peace and joy to what otherwise seemed a daily ritual of medical tests, pills and experiential drugs.

For many of us we can not fully understand what it is like to live our lives knowing that at any moment we could wake up with a new medical condition that could bring us our final breath. Therefore, attending conferences and being able to experience the presence of God with friends from across the country each year reminded them of God's promise to never leave or forsake.

As we prepare for TEN Conference 2008, we ask that each of our affiliate churches, ministries and Christian Workers and friends give to the Schubert/Shears fund. This fund has been established to help those living with HIV/AIDS be able to attend the conference. Many of those living with HIV/AIDS are on disability only making $800 a month.  Personally, there is no flexibility in their budgets to be able to afford to pay anything outside of food, shelter and medications.  Each year, we have requests and need for assistance from this special fund.

Would you please join with us in giving to the Schubert/Shears Fund. 100% of all monies raised goes directly towards assistance for those living with HIV/AIDS to be able to attend the conference.  Attending the conference can make a difference ... read on for personal testimonies.

Gui Gui ... "No words can express how I was blessed and impacted by the TEN Conference and the way the Holy Ghost spoke to me. Understanding my homosexuality and knowing that it does not affect my relationship with "Dad" brought me to a freedom that would not be possible without The Schubert/Shears Fund. Moreover, the complete acceptance of myself, being gay and HIV positive, has improved my life in so many ways. You have no idea how your help can change people's life. Thank you so much!"

DougDoug ... "I am legally blind and partially deaf as a result of complication of advanced HIV disease.  Because of the generosity of those who gave to Schubert/Shears; I was able to experience the joy of fellowship and God's love that I would have never been able to otherwise.  Being deaf/blind can be very isolating, and thanks to Schubert/Shears the world is not so lonely after all."

What is Your Dream?

DreamWe've been looking at what it is to be Highly Effective in Ministry this year. While becoming highly effective in ministry is not likely to be easy, it IS achievable. If God has called your church or ministry into existence then you may be assured His intention is for it to flourish not flounder.  His word tells us He will never abandon us and that He will always provide us what we need, when we need it, as we seek to do His will. It doesn't mean that victory comes easily, nor is the path to victory clear. It also doesn't mean that we sit back and do nothing waiting for miraculous things to happen.  God has endowed us with brains, language, energy and many resources (each other) so that we can apply ourselves to the challenges of ministry and - with His guidance and blessing - see His will and His people prevail.

So ask yourself, "What is my dream for my church/ministry/life?  Is it to lead other people to victory? Is it to share the gospel in strategic and life-changing ways? Is it to be supportive of others where people's relationships with God and family are intimate?  Is it to reach out to the needy and to give of yourself in serving the poor and disadvantaged or marginalized?

If these are some of what you desire, then you're on your way to effectiveness. Your dream is a dream about spiritual significance and life transformation. You're dreaming of "the church" the way it is meant to be, and with your dedication, the way it will become....yours is a dream that pleases God.  What is your dream?

THE PATH TO BECOMING HIGHLY EFFECTIVE

Many of us live life like a gerbil on his exercise wheel, running at top speed but never making any progress.

Conf 2008 LOGO"Now this is what the LORD Almighty says: 'Give careful thought to your      ways.  You have planted much, but have harvested little. You eat, but       never have enough. You drink, but never have your fill. You put on clothes, but are not warm. You earn wages, only to put them in a purse with holes in it." (Haggai 1:5-6)

Sound familiar? We must obey the wisdom of the Lord and "...give careful thought to our ways" if we desire to become highly effective as individuals and as ministries.

Becoming effective is a journey:  Becoming highly effective does not happen overnight. No one can lay hands on you and give you the anointing of being effective. It is developed through daily walking with God, reading His Word, hearing His voice, and living out what you learn in a progressive and consistent manner (Luke 9:23)

Becoming effective is an attitude: The Cambridge Dictionary defines being effective as being able to do something skillfully. We must never sacrifice excellence to mediocrity. God honored Daniel because he had a spirit of excellence and showed exceptional qualities (Daniel 6:3). This means that whatever we put our hand to must be done with the intention of giving it our best effort (Ecclesiastes 9:10 ).

Becoming effective requires perspective: The way we perceive ourselves and others often either helps or hinders our effectiveness. We were created by God as individuals with innate uniqueness. There will never be another Billy Graham or Joyce Meyers but that is how God has ordained it-you are His special gift to the world with rare gifts and qualities to reflect His glory (Deuteronomy 14:2; Genesis 12:2-3; 1st Peter 2:9). The highly effective individual sees what God is doing in and through others, rejoices with them in success, and humbly receives greater wisdom through the experience.

Becoming highly effective takes focused effort:  Thomas Edison once said, "Genius is one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration." I believe this also applies to becoming highly effective. Great sermons have to be lived before they can truly be proclaimed with power and authority. Great churches emerge from the blood, sweat, and tears of people who are committed to God and committed to one another.

Effort is crucial but work alone will not make us effective. The Scriptures teach us that "without a vision the people perish..." (Proverbs 29:18 KJV), without direction and focus our lives become unproductive and scattered. The swamp is a large body of water that has no boundaries and no direction and it usually produces nothing but flies, mosquitoes and alligators while the river is also a large body of water but one that channeled, focused and directed. When its power is harnessed through a dam, it can produce enough electricity to light and heat an entire city. So too, the man or woman of God willing to work with God instead of for God, will see great power and light for His praise.

In the end, we must remember that our perceptions are limited and our standards are often skewed. We live in a world that seeks the biggest, brightest, and most talented while God seeks a willing vessel. Mother Teresa of Calcutta was the most unlikely image of success in worldly terms-a poor woman, living in an impoverished country, who spent her days holding lepers as they died but the radiance of God shown through her giving light to all the world. I can not imagine being more effective than that.
